The Cannabis Congressional Caucus wrote a follow up letter to President Joe Biden urging him again to pardon all federal non-violent cannabis convictions.

WASHINGTON D.C. – On Thursday, Congressman Jamaal Bowman (NY-16), Congressman Earl Blumenauer (OR-03), and Congresswoman Barbara Lee (CA-13) sent a letter, following up on a previous letter, to President Joe Biden again urging him to pardon all federal non-violent cannabis convictions. All three representatives are members of the Congressional Cannabis Caucus, with Representatives Blumenauer and Lee serving as Co-Chairs.

“We write to urgently request an update on the February 18, 2021 letter signed by 35 members of Congress and led by Reps. Blumenauer and Lee requesting you pardon all federal non-violent cannabis convictions,” wrote Reps. Bowman, Blumenauer, and Lee. “Many remain behind bars due to racially discriminatory cannabis policies and continue to accrue criminal fees. To begin rectifying the damage done by these discriminatorily implemented policies and reunite families before the holidays, we reiterate our ask that you use your executive authority to pardon all individuals convicted of nonviolent cannabis offenses, whether formerly or currently incarcerated. We further write to specify that all federal criminal fines and fees be cancelled for all nonviolent cannabis offenses.”

“Just as previous presidents have used executive authority to issue blanket pardons consistent with our values that benefit the American people, this is an opportunity for you to uphold commitments made during the campaign and revitalize communities across the country,” continued Reps. Bowman, Blumenauer, and Lee. “Mass incarceration has disproportionately harmed Black and brown communities and its impact can be felt everywhere. Every non-violent offender given the opportunity to return home can create a positive ripple effect by reuniting families, connecting people to work opportunities, and beginning the road to healing from the harm these policies continue to inflict.”

“I have to make a big change now” 

said Studio Linear founder, Andrea Beaulieu, as she was laying next to her daughter at bed time, feeling heart race uncontrollably. She felt like she was about to die. Enough was enough.

Most adults have experienced a moment similar to this. That “AHA” moment where you realize that you, and only you, are going to make the change that needs to happen for your physical, emotional and spiritual health.

That moment, for Andrea, wasn’t the usual and all-too-common-these-days “I have to stop drinking alcohol now” moment. This moment was loaded with many layers of choices that were about to affect Andrea’s business and her ability to provide for her family of four. This was complicated.

Big Alcohol, after-all, was funding Andrea’s business and as the Creative Director for wine and beverage campaigns geared towards moms it was Andrea’s job to know and love that alcohol she was creating designs.

I attended several sessions, but spent a fair amount of my time walking the expo floor to meet with Missouri’s Medical Marijuana industry  pioneers.

The first friendly face I found was that of Alexis Simmons of The Flower MIll USA. Alexis has reinvented the grinder by replacing the traditional metal on metal grinding device with a milling process that allows for uniform milling and fluffy results. I ran into another pair of Sally and Amy from the Trimmer Store. These ladies saw an opportunity in the post harvest sector of cannabis cultivation, and began renting processing equipment to cultivators throughout the state. The ladies of The Trimmer Store are evidence that the cannabis industry is just like any other.  There are goods and services to be acquired and provided. My key takeaways from the 2021, Midwest Canna Convention and Expo:

1. Women in Missouri are dominating the ancillary cannabis business game!  While I was hard pressed to find diversity amongst license facility operators, it is obvious that women in Missouri have figured out how to turn their past experience and practices into a necessary commodity in the cannabis industry. 
2. Social equity and diversity do not appear to have played a factor in determining who would be awarded state licensure.  However, the market is young enough, and adult use rumors keep Missouri residents hopeful of an inclusive and equitable adult use market in 2022. 
3. There were multiple speakers, vendors and presenters from throughout the country which tells me that there are still opportunities for Missouri natives interested in getting into the industry, to find their role and take a seat at the table.  

The governor of Texas recently passed a heinous abortion bill that effectively bans abortions at SIX WEEKS — a timeline where many women may not even know they are pregnant yet.⁠ ⁠ Activists have vowed to fight this new law that is being said to be the strictest since the Roe V Wade decision…but in the meantime, women need help getting safe access to reproductive health care.

We’ve teamed up with the Women’s Reproductive Rights Assistance Project (WRRAP) to help spread the word and get donations coming in. WRRAP is a non-partisan, non-profit organization helping women gain access to safe, legal abortion services and emergency contraceptives that works directly with pre-qualified, reputable reproductive health clinics across the U.S. on behalf of disadvantaged women in need and gets them the funds within a week.

• Establishes a regulatory framework within the Oregon Health Authority, which will design and administer the program
• Establishes the Oregon Psilocybin Advisory Board, appointed by the governor
• Requires a training and licensure system for therapy facilitators, psilocybin manufacturers and testing laboratories, and requires a tracking system for psilocybin products
• Imposes a two-year development period before initial licenses can be granted

What the measure doesn’t allow:

• Retail sales
• Off-site consumption or possession
• Branding or advertising of psilocybin products
• Unregulated or untracked psilocybin production, inventory or delivery
• Access to minors

Healing Advocacy Fund is working with experts, researchers and advocates to design Oregon’s psilocybin therapy program. Over the next two years, the Oregon Psilocybin Advisory Board and the Oregon Health Authority will establish regulations on applications and licensing, psilocybin manufacturing and tracking, operations and therapy facilitation. So, we want to change the world, right? Yes. We do. This shit is hard no matter who you are. Add any number of layers of oppression and trauma (non-male gendered, black or brown skin, socioeconomic background, any kind of abuse, I can go on and on...) and chances are you are fed up with, well, everything.

The War on Drugs actively harmed (and continues to harm) marginalized communities and people of color are still more likely to get convicted of cannabis related crimes today. TODAY: Amazon is actively supporting legalization, celebrities own cannabis brands, wealthy white male investors are actively investing hundreds of millions of dollars into more white male owned and operated business because "they see themselves" in those owners and in one state you can grow, consume and sell cannabis legally and in the state next door you can go to prison and lose your children.

And then we have our oh-so-imperfect modality of Health Care. I could go on for days about how our health care system misses the whole mind, body and spirit connection and, in turn, is not helping anyone actually BE WELL. It is frustrating to have doctors completely out of touch with plant medicine and its amazing connection and relationship to us as a species. We need whole wellness to heal ourselves.

The drain humanity has on our planet is going to reach critical mass in the next 50 years. The number of natural disasters is on the climb because our planet is suffering from the insatiable greed humans are known for. Climate change is real, as I write this from the soon-to-be totally on fire west coast of the US.

The reality of all of this is almost laughable. Almost...

But no fear, ya'll! Despite the scary truths of modern society, I am a confidently realistic optimist thanks to tools like meditation, music, community, dance, laughter and cannabis companies like TONIC. Oh my YES, TONIC! Hot damn, I love these amazing CBD products!

Brittany recalled the moment when she realized that her cannabis company could actively help change the world.

"I experienced first hand not only the hypocrisy and backwards nature of doctors pushing pills over plants, but also the privilege around consuming as a middle-upper class white woman. When I found cannabis in high school it clicked. I dealt with depression pretty much my whole life and cannabis was something that finally made me feel “normal” but the misinformation and stigma around the plant caused every authority figure in my life to tell me I was wrong and I was eventually subjected to bi weekly drug testing formTHC while being prescribed Xanax. I began to abuse Xanax and came to the realization this shit was fucked up; I was much better off smoking weed than taking these pills, but that didn’t matter because the doctors were saying to take the pills. It cut me deep that this was the reality that so many people were living.

Then, in college, I got arrested for smoking weed in my dorm room. Because my parents were able to pay for me to have a lawyer, take my day in court, and pay the $2750 fee to enter an expungement program that consisted of 1 year probation and 1 day of community service, I was able to have my record cleared and not carry that incident with me as I entered the workforce, etc. I realized that there were a lot of kids that, if put in that position, would not have the same outcome. I witnessed my Black friends have a much greater fear of getting caught by the cops than my white friends.

The year after I started TONIC, I was part of a panel at an event called Breaking the Grass Ceiling, put on by Humble Bloom and Maya Shaw, and that was the first time the big picture of racial inequality and oppression around the plant was truly internalized. It was through the conversations at that event that I was able to put this all together - all of these pieces of ideas and feelings that were already in me where being put together; I could see how it all fit and I could see my place in it all.

A few months later I started TONIC’s Purpose Program, pledging to donate a portion of our revenue each month to a different nonprofit partner dedicated to supporting communities who need our support. We have donated over $50k since the program’s start. At Bardo, we work to lower the financial barrier to entry and offer up our resources unconditionally to BIPOC brands to help promote and nurture more representation on the ownership level and ensure that the communities most harmed by the war on drugs have equity and opportunity in the hemp/cannabis industry."

Jay Jackson, aka Laganja Estranja, is a world-renowned choreographer, artist, cannabis advocate and LGBTQ+ icon.

A U.S. Presidential Scholar in The Arts, Jackson earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in dance and choreography from the California Institute of the Arts and launched to stardom after being selected to compete on LogoTV’s Season 6 of RuPaul’s Drag Race.
