Candid Chronicle: “Cannabis, Social Media, and the Women Behind it” by Chelsea Smith
Lisa posted a blog entry in Tokeativity HQ Blog
Social media has become a platform for the legal cannabis industry to not only display their brands but create a community revolving around the plant. Women, in particular, have found success in promoting brands, educating, and taking followers from all over the world on a journey of cannabis legalization creating relationships with these fans. Through this, they have a global reach to make a change and are jumping at the opportunity. A quick search on any popular social media site will bring up everything from Women Cannabis Business Owners, to Women’s Veterans Support Groups all based around this beautiful http://tokeativity.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/IMG_4719-640x300-300x141.jpgfemale plant. But its more than just a group on social media, these women are there to lift each other up by making connections, supporting businesses, and offering resources to other female-run organizations with a desire for everyone to succeed. It is a new level of compassion being brought to the table that allows for collaboration benefiting all parties involved. Groups like Women Grow, Tokativity, Women Leaders in Cannabis, Grow Sisters and Women & Weed are actively pursuing a change and equality in the legal cannabis industry. Using meetups, online classes, educational events, lobbying, and support groups they are being the voice of not only gender equality in the industry but also help break the stigma of the traditional “stoner”. By Chiara Juster http://tokeativity.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/4.png Tokeativity is the global cannabis feminist community, you’d be hard pressed to find a member who isn’t close friends with a cannabis consuming mama if they aren’t one themself. This story is about a Canna Mama and her partner who are in need some support – please take action below! Maria (Juanita Maria Kinsey) is a cannamama like so many of us. Maria grew up in Florida, a place as different from the PNW & Northern California as one can imagine. As a seventeen-year-old Maria had a daughter, like many kids that age the allure of her friends and their fast Florida lifestyle prevented her from being the parent her family would have preferred. Her family made the decision to raise that child, the child of a child. She was still young and turned her life around heading west to the fabled lands of Mendocino. In Mendocino she found her soulmate. Colby Standley was a generational grower, the type of guy they only make in the mountains. She was in love. He was in love. The love that people only dream of. Colby & Maria grew a beautiful life together, and beautiful flower too. Maria saw firsthand how cannabis medicinally benefits people. She watched as those suffering from cancer were provided unspeakable relief. She made the moral decision to disseminate medication to those who were suffering free of charge. Not like anyone could charge much in Mendocino, cannabis was the biggest industry in the area. While the grey market evolved Maria & Colby remained compliant with guidance from the Sheriff. She grew to appreciate the quality of all things that enter her body, fruits & greens alike. http://tokeativity.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/Blog-Long-Images.png Maria suffered from secondary infertility. Colby and Maria longed for a baby, they tried and tried. Colby’s heart broke watching his wife repeatedly miscarry over eight long years as they struggled to grow their family. Though enchanted with the beauty of Mendocino Maria did not forget her family back in Florida. Her elderly grandmother required a home health aide which was incredibly expensive. She wanted to help her family. In Northern California cannabis grew like the weed it is, in less fortunate states the price of flower easily demanded five times what it did back West. An ill fated decision was made and flower diverted out of state. Maria and Colby loved their dogs, they had four dogs. Colby considered his parents his best friends, beside his wife, and left two dogs with his parents when he and Maria took an RV trip to Florida with the other two dogs and fifty pounds of Mendo flower in August 2017. While Maria was out shopping in Tallahassee, Colby was relaxing at the RV with the dogs when suddenly he was surrounded by heavily armed authorities, his first thought was for his dogs as he pleaded for them not to be shot. The dogs were hauled away to the pound and Colby to jail. When Maria went to bail him out she was taken into custody. Fortunately, Maria’s daughter from her teens was now an adult and rushed to successfully rescue the dogs. http://tokeativity.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/3.png Maria and Colby were allowed to return to California while on bail. The requirements were very restrictive including drug testing twice a week which could only be conducted 120 miles from where they lived at the cost of $240 a week. This was a huge burden both logistically and financially. They were unable to comply with the restrictions and bond was rescinded. In March of 2018 Colby turned himself in, unable to comply with the burdensome restrictions. Three weeks later Maria found out she was expecting. At last!! This excitement never dissipated though she was taken into custody a month after her husband. Maria gave birth behind bars November 27, 2018. She was shackled as she was transported from jail to the hospital. When people give birth while incarcerated their families are not informed. Maria had an amazing older brother, he and his wife, themselves doting grandparents, eagerly anticipated the birth of this child that they would lovingly welcome into their home. They knew the time had come when they didn’t hear from Maria. The absence of the daily call sent a message louder than any voice could. They waited three long days before receiving a call from the hospital that Maria had given birth and was transported back to jail, and that Rainbow (her real name shall remain anonymous per request of her guardians) was waiting for them to take her home. Maria had been lucky in a way that parents on the outside would never deem as lucky, she had a cesarean section meaning that she was able to stay with her baby for those three too short days instead of having her newborn ripped from her arms that very day. When Maria’s brother and sister-in-law arrived at the hospital they were overwhelmed with how kind everyone was, it was unanticipated and over the top. He asked why everyone was being so nice and was hit with a sad truth. Most babies weren’t as lucky as little Rainbow, having a loving family to take her in set her apart for the vast majority of babies that were born to the incarcerated and the hospital staff was filled with joy knowing that this baby was loved. It wasn’t until sentencing, in May, 2019, that Colby laid eyes upon his daughter for the first time and Maria saw her for the second time. Their attorney advised them that a sympathetic substitute judge was on the bench that day who would likely make them an offer better than they would see again, well below what the prosecutor was offering and far below the 75 years they were facing had they been convicted at trial on charges of cannabis trafficking, conspiracy to traffic, and using the RV to traffic . This Judge, true to their attorney’s words, offered Maria 6 years 3 months and 2 weeks, Colby received one less year due to his clean record. http://tokeativity.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/1-1.png Today Maria and Colby sit behind bars longing for the day that they will be reunited with one another and their little Rainbow. Maria’s first daughter as well as her brother and sister-in-law regularly bring the now toddler to visit her parents. “That’s mommy’s house,” the child cries out with glee when they approach the institution. Mommy and daddy aren’t allowed any communication given that they were co-defendants, yet their love continues to grow. Maria has taken her time behind bars to better herself as best she can. She formally studies horticulture– the food they grow is for staff not inmates. One of the things that Colby has always loved about Maria is that she isn’t vain, makeup isn’t her thing, but taking care of her body is important to her. Sunblock isn’t provided behind bars. Laboring in the Florida sun takes its toll on one’s skin. One of the things she uses her scarce commissary funds on is sunblock. As someone who appreciates sungrown food she laments what counts as food behind bars. For her recents birthday her friends made her a cake using crushed up commissary cookies mixed with creamer. A far cry from prior birthdays for the organic loving foodie who loves Thai food. As a dog lover Maria has been fortunate to participate in canine training. This gives her the opportunity to touch something warm and loving, though who she truly longs to hold is her little Rainbow. Colby was recently transferred to a community release program where he works in craft service– this doesn’t mean he gets even a morsel of extra food. As a guy who loves to cook (he admittedly loves to cook and clean!) he can’t wait for the opportunity to prepare meals for his own family. He has said that nothing is more gratifying than cooking a meal for his family and watching them enjoy it. True to the spirit of Tokeativity, Maria and her fellow inmates operate as a collective. The hygiene products provided to inmates aren’t the best for their skin and hair. There’s no shame in a little dandruff for which the inmates must spend $10.85 for a bottle of Head and Shoulders. Maria and her friends share shampoos, conditioners, lotions, and the like that they purchase at vastly inflated prices at the commissary. When there is an indigent female in their group they make sure she is included and suffers no further indginties for lack of funds. They all suffer enough as it is. When released before the winter holidays 2023 Maria will be reunited with her husband and child. Thanks to her brother there won’t be a custody battle. Most women who give birth behind bars face an uphill battle upon their release. Is it within the best interests of the child to return them to a mother in name only? Maria is the best mom that she can be while behind bars, she has always had constant communication with her daughter and is very much a part of the toddlers life. As a community we must come together and call attention to the fact that women continue to be arrested for cannabis. As mothers and daughters we have a moral obligation to ensure better conditions for those of us who are incarcerated including massive reform of the system that tears families apart and rips babies from their mothers arms. Maria will never be able to breastfeed her baby, Colby will never stay up nights changing diapers and soothing his baby, invaluable time has been lost. What we can do is let them know that they are not forgotten and help smooth the path for when they are released. Please consider supporting their Go Fund Me Incarcerated for Marijuana- Family Needs Help. Tonight when you tuck in your sweet one, or when you pass a child on the street, think of Rainbow and her parents who want nothing more than to be reunited. New BIPOC Collective Seeks To Shift Psilocybin Therapy Movement Towards Inclusion
Lisa posted a blog entry in Tokeativity HQ Blog
Contact: Rebecca Martinez rebecca@fruitingbodiescollective.com Fruitingbodiescollective.com 503-396-1906 New BIPOC Collective Seeks To Shift Psilocybin Therapy Movement Towards Inclusion Two Local Women Are Bridging The Gap Between Psychedelic Insiders and the Curious Public Fruiting Bodies is launching their online community on March 13th, in tandem with Tokeativity’s online Psychedelics & Plant Medicine Social. Fruiting Bodies Collective is on a mission to ensure that Oregon’s psilocybin (mushroom) therapy program is affordable, equitable, and culturally relevant to Oregonians from all backgrounds. Founded in 2020 by Elan Hagens and Rebecca Martinez, this women-run social enterprise and online community creates free and low-cost educational materials for those eager to learn about psilocybin therapy, especially people from marginalized groups who might otherwise lack access. Podcast episodes, educational e-books, and free informational downloads will be available on FruitingBodiesCollective.com in an effort to make previously exclusive and hard-to-find information readily accessible to the public. Their launch on March 13th coincides with a fundraising effort to raise $20,000 to support this endeavor. The past year has seen public interest in psilocybin explode as the passage of measure 109 landed Oregon in the national spotlight. 1.2 million Oregonians (55% of voters) voted Yes on the bill, which legalized the therapeutic use of mushrooms and will create a licensing framework for the program. The required two-year development phase has begun. Along with public curiosity comes hesitation, assumption, and guesswork. When the bill passed, the Fruiting Bodies founders saw an opportunity to avoid the mistakes of the cannabis industry and ensure that Oregonians who are Black, Indigenous, and people of color see a program on day one that is explicitly designed with their interests in mind. Both Hagens and Martinez found themselves inundated with questions from the public due to Martinez’ involvement with the campaign and Hagens’ mycology background. Questions such as: Are mushrooms safe? Is micro-dosing legal now? Will this actually help with depression? When can I try this for myself? This outpouring of interest demonstrated a clear need for accurate, inviting, and highly shareable information regarding psilocybin therapy, mushroom science, and future opportunities in the space. The founders’ experience in communications and community organizing led them online. With a time-sensitive message and an ambition of growing to 100,000 active monthly members, they’re focusing on the platforms where people spend their time. Until recently, the psychedelic healing community has been predominantly white, and due to the lasting impact of the war on drugs, communities of color may be unlikely to seek out these promising therapies. “I’m a Black woman and I care about making these treatments relevant to my community. I want to change the face of psychedelics so people from my neighborhood, people from my family’s church, can see that this medicine is safe and can improve our quality of life. I want to make sure treatment is affordable, education is widespread, and we are not left behind in the rollout of this program.” -Elan Hagens, Co-founder & CEO of Fruiting Bodies In early 2023, when the Oregon Health Authority begins accepting applications for clinics, therapists, and mushroom producers, there will be a diverse network of tens of thousands of Oregonians who need to understand the principles of psilocybin therapy, feel informed and prepared for involvement, and have ample access to need-based funding for licensing and therapy fees. Fruiting Bodies is helping drive these efforts. Fruiting Bodies Collective launches March 13th. Hagens and Martinez have particular focus on women, communities of color and their allies. Their current online audience exceeds 5,000 people across social media platforms. Supporters can join an affordable monthly membership with special access to news, Oregon Health Authority program updates, and an inner circle of leaders, learners, and collaborators. Through widespread crowdfunding, sales of educational materials, and enrollment in their online community, Fruiting Bodies is setting out to raise $20,000 in Spring of 2021 to advance their effort and build upon existing momentum and community support. Like-minded groups and individuals wishing to sponsor Fruiting Bodies or make a tax-exempt gift can reach out via the contact form on their website. About the founders: Rebecca Martinez, a Mexican author and community organizer, served on staff as volunteer and event coordinator at the Yes on IP 109 campaign. Her book, Edge Play, details her personal experiences with psychedelic healing. Elan Hagens is best known for her beloved gourmet mushroom company, Temptress Truffles. A decade ago, she was the first Black vendor in the Portland Farmers Market community and has been a community leader and educator ever since. Social Equity Policy Initiatives in Cannabis Are All the Buzz… by Allison Holmes http://tokeativity.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/2-1024x576.png THE COMPLEXITIES OF SOCIAL EQUITY I started this project looking to make a list of “The Top 10 Equity Bills and Initiatives” being implemented around the country and quickly discovered that claims of equitable legislation live on a pretty broad spectrum. So what is equity, exactly, and how do we ensure it through policy? WHAT IS SOCIAL EQUITY Equitable cannabis policy acknowledges that historically persecuted populations have limited access to the knowledge, money, and support they need to successfully conduct business within the cannabis industry. Equity focuses on dividing resources proportionally to the needs of those involved in order to achieve a fair outcome, so any equitable program must provide a boost into the industry for people who may not have the same capital, connections, or education as their white, male, able-bodied counterparts. According to the Social Equity Legislation in Cannabis: A National Study of State and Local Programming, “less than ⅕ of cannabis business owners identify as being a person of color” and 100% of the respondents to this study said that state and local governments aren’t doing enough to change this. It’s not enough to simply expunge the records of folks who faced criminal charges for marijuana possession, while that is an important step, it leaves the rest of the staircase totally unaccounted for. Equitable drug policy means undoing the harms caused by the War on Drugs and offering direct and specific support to the people most impacted by marijuana prohibition, disproportionate arrests, and incarceration. Programs that aim to be equitable must include a pathway to prosperity that creates opportunities for Black, Latinx, Indigenous, Asian, Pacific Islander and other people of color who face economic marginalization and have been most profoundly impacted by the failed drug war. HOW EQUITY IS BEING LEGISLATED “Without considering real estate support, legal support, securing operating capital (without losing equity), normalization campaigns, and a focus on real community reinvestment, social equity programs will not be able to support economic development in disproportionately impacted communities.” – Timeka Drew, operating social equity license holder and seasoned cannabis industry executive Establishing equity through legislation requires a nuanced understanding and a truly holistic approach. It must account for access to funding, specialized licensing programs, ongoing training and professional support, and reinvestment into black and brown communities. Access to Capital The Social Equity Legislation in Cannabis: A National Study of State and Local Programming surveyed equity programs and operators about the barriers that prevent entry into the industry, “100% of the respondents said that access to capital was the biggest need and challenge.” The study goes on to say that access to fairly structured capital, in non-predatory form, is essential, ‘It is crucial that social equity applicants have access to start-up and ongoing funding… in order to survive.” Examples of funding include reducing or eliminating application fees, grants, low or no interest loans, free rent, and rent assistance. Licensing “”Equity applicants” are a very specific form of equitable policy that is supposed to be narrowly targeted toward ensuring the ownership of the legal industry includes those who have been disproportionately impacted. Because of crony capitalism making licenses very limited, we have to force the government to allow us to own our piece through the law, which mandates a certain number or % of licenses go to impacted people.”” – Jason Ortiz, Minority Cannabis Business Association There is no one single way to set eligibility for equity applicants, each state and locality devise different ways of determining specific eligibility requirements. Most legislation requires equity applicants to have long-term residency in certain zip codes that had high numbers of cannabis-related arrests, a maximum income, and to have had a cannabis-related conviction or arrest. Equity applicant eligibility should be specific and tailored to the context of the community in which it is being implemented. *** Don’t miss Timeka Drew’s talk about “How to Apply for an Equity Lisence” streaming live from the Pride & Equity Tokeativity Social happening on Saturday, June 12. RSVP for free today! Professional Support “Equity applicants are by definition impacted individuals who are often expected to have a level of business acumen that’s comparable to an MBA. If an equity applicant doesn’t have the resources to properly vet a predatory operating agreement or what it takes to stand up a business, then how are they supposed to have a shot at retaining any upside let alone open their doors?” – Hilary Yu with Our Academy It is imperative that programs provide equity applicants with direct support throughout the process of application and continued mentorship into business ownership. Examples include: professional support in navigating the application process, education on ownership rights to prevent exploitation, business coaching, mentorship, and ongoing access to training, and legal services. Community Reinvestment “The War on Drugs devastated communities by stealing opportunities connected to jobs, housing and education. Without projects and funding focused specifically on addressing these harms created by racist and classist policies, social equity programs will continue to fall short in connecting the dots between the wrongs created by the War on Drugs and the revolutionary concept of an industry that is invested in righting those wrongs.” – Timeka Drew, operating social equity license holder and seasoned cannabis industry executive Because the harms of the drug war have been so exhaustive and far-reaching, there is a great need for expansive and in-depth reinvestment into black and brown communities. Equity programs use their platform to ensure the reallocation of cannabis tax revenue be funneled into impacted communities in the form of direct investment. Funding for restorative justice, equal education, access to health care, affordable housing, and home ownership, etc… IMPACT AND RESPONSIBILITY White folks who have benefited from the use of cannabis or profited off of a legal cannabis market should be using their privilege to advocate for those most harmed by the War on Drugs. This is an opportunity to repair the damage that was done. Legalization cannot be equitable unless it starts off as equitable, the intention is to give the communities most impacted by prohibition a head start in an industry that will take off. Utilize our platforms and privilege to increase awareness, get involved politically, share generational wealth, invest in a support structure to help Black, Latinx, Indigenous, Asian, Pacific Islander and other people of color prosper in this community. CONCLUSION I’m writing this piece to leverage my whiteness and my access to social capital to encourage Tokeativity members to understand and support equitability within the cannabis industry as legalization sweeps across the United States. It’s important to acknowledge that cannabis equity legislation can only do so much; we must work together to create pathways to prosperity in all aspects of our society. It’s overdue, but I’m excited to see the cannabis-loving community upholding this conversation and doing something about it. The attention being paid to equity and the diligent activists of color refusing to settle for anything less has me feeling hopeful about the impact this industry will have in this world. So look into what’s happening in your state and in your community and get involved! I’ll end this piece with a reflective statement from the cofounder of The Social Impact Center, Kristen Lovell: “Social Equity is a struggle that may not ever be won, but must alway be fought for. There are 48,000 collateral consequences of a conviction. Simple things, like housing, employment, and voting rights are affected when an individual undergoes incarceration. Families are broken. Education is withheld. Neighborhoods terrorized. Black and brown bodies profiled. Lives change course forever. There might never be adequate reparation, but healing from the War on Drugs is a process we must all dedicate ourselves to if we wish to consider ourselves cannabis community members. You can be a colonist or a community member. A community member can not fight for licensing without expungement, or for banking without refunding recompension, or for taxation without community reinvestment.” – Kristen Lovell, long time cannabis activist and head of brand at Biko Flower The post Social Equity Policy Initiatives in Cannabis Are All the Buzz… But, What Defines Equitable Policy? appeared first on Tokeativity®. All across Oregon, women are taking leadership roles in the emerging cannabis industry http://tokeativity.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/caef12af-0c51-4f20-956c-91e434a3d66e-large16x9_TheFactory1-300x169.jpg Southern Oregon is well on its way to enjoying more of the legal cannabis lifestyle as new women-led and women-focused events encourage community, education, normalization and, of course, fun. Tokeativity, a Portland-based cannabis community for women that hosts everything from socials to business workshops, is expanding down to the Eugene area. Co-owners Lisa Snyder and Samantha Montanaro are launching the chapter June 1 and are working with the board of Women Leaders in Cannabis, a women-run, women-focused group led by Heidi Fikstad, owner of Moss Crossing, and Anna Kaplan, operations manager at Sugartop Buddery. “Southern Oregon will be our sister cities,” says Snyder, who is also the founder of Tokeativity. “We are excited to support and start branding outside of Portland.” The post MAIL TRIBUNE “Women and weed” by Liz Gold appeared first on Tokeativity® - The Global Feminist Community for Active Cannabis Culture. For folks those of us living in Missouri, the November 2018 election will always mark a historical event. It was then that Article XIV of Missouri was amended to allow patients of the state of Missouri access medical Cannabis. By early spring of 2019, the MOCANN BIZCON Expo by Midwest Canna Expos, was held at Union Station in St. Louis, MO. This first of its kind convention and expo provided future patients and industry hopefuls the opportunity to connect with vendors as well as gain firsthand information on the emerging industry. Flash forward to 2021 when a fellow Tokeativity member, Leah Maurer, introduced me to Karin Chester-Spinks. http://tokeativity.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/Tokeativity-Midwest-Canna-Expos-Karin-Chester-Spinks.pngKarin Chester-Spinks I found out that Karin was the woman behind Missouri’s first ever Cannabis Convention and Expo. I jumped at the opportunity to meet this woman that put on one of the most impactful and empowering events I’d ever had the opportunity to attend. We scheduled a 30-minute meet and greet; but two and a half hours later, I realized I had only scratched the surface on the impact Karin is having on the Missouri Medical Cannabis Industry. Karin played an integral role in the 2016 medical cannabis initiative in Missouri but was 200 signatures shy of getting the measure on the ballot. In 2018 Karin became the campaign coordinator for the ballot initiative that ultimately passed, allowing for medical cannabis to become legal in Missouri. It was during this time that Karin mastered the art of event planning and once Article XIV passed, it was a no-brainer that Karin needed to plan an event. I asked Karin what 5 things she was most excited about for this year’s upcoming expo on August 11 & 12, 2021: This year’s expo will be a hybrid event; held in person and virtually. Missouri Medical Patients will have the opportunity to attend the virtual patient track for free. We’re also pleased to announce the new addition of our industry career fair on August 12th. Network with potential employers, learn about the most prominent cannabis companies, and interact with others excited about this rapidly developing industry. This year attendees will receive demonstrations from Chef/ Chocolatier Christopher Elbow from The Funny Bone Chocolate out of Kansas City, MO. A career fair will be held at this year’s expo for a $25 fee. This includes a resume editing and distributing service at no additional cost! For the second year in a row, MOCANN BIZCON will hold the Greenway Industry Awards at the end of night one of the trade show. The Greenway Industry Awards recognizes those nominated and voted on by Greenway Magazine readers as being Leaders in Industry and Advocacy. http://tokeativity.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/Tokeativity-MOCANN.png http://tokeativity.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/Tokeativity-MOCANN-2.pnghttp://tokeativity.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/Tokeativity-MOCANN-3.png In wrapping up our talk Karin shared that one of her favorite things about what she does is “being able to employ people”, and shared upcoming career opportunities within her organization. “We’re looking for Brand Ambassadors”….“I’m excited about Midwest Canna Demos. Article by: Talya Mayfield http://tokeativity.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/Grinder-tokeativity-talya-mayfield.pngI had the pleasure of attending Missouri’s Midwest Canna Conference and Expo in early august, and I think it’s safe to say Missouri women are creating their own path in this new, emerging market. I attended several sessions, but spent a fair amount of my time walking the expo floor to meet with Missouri’s Medical Marijuana industry pioneers. The first friendly face I found was that of Alexis Simmons of The Flower MIll USA. Alexis has reinvented the grinder by replacing the traditional metal on metal grinding device with a milling process that allows for uniform milling and fluffy results. You can view the live demo of this product at….( link video provided). Follow Alexis on Instagram @alexisflowermillusa or lowermillusa.com. I ran into another pair of Sally and Amy from the Trimmer Store. These ladies saw an opportunity in the post harvest sector of cannabis cultivation, and began renting processing equipment to cultivators throughout the state. The ladies of The Trimmer Store are evidence that the cannabis industry is just like any other. There are goods and services to be acquired and provided. If you’re wanting to be a part of this industry, you must find your niche, and jump in! For more information on the The Trimmer Store go to, https://www.thetrimmerstore.com. My key takeaways from the 2021, Midwest Canna Convention and Expo: Women in Missouri are dominating the ancillary cannabis business game! While I was hard pressed to find diversity amongst license facility operators, it is obvious that women in Missouri have figured out how to turn their past experience and practices into a necessary commodity in the cannabis industry. Social equity and diversity do not appear to have played a factor in determining who would be awarded state licensure. However, the market is young enough, and adult use rumors keep Missouri residents hopeful of an inclusive and equitable adult use market in 2022. There were multiple speakers, vendors and presenters from throughout the country which tells me that there are still opportunities for Missouri natives interested in getting into the industry, to find their role and take a seat at the table. .fusion-body .fusion-builder-column-8{width:100% !important;margin-top : 0px;margin-bottom : 0px;}.fusion-builder-column-8 > .fusion-column-wrapper {padding-top : 0px !important;padding-right : 0px !important;margin-right : 1.92%;padding-bottom : 0px !important;padding-left : 0px !important;margin-left : 1.92%;}@media only screen and (max-width:1024px) {.fusion-body .fusion-builder-column-8{width:100% !important;}.fusion-builder-column-8 > .fusion-column-wrapper {margin-right : 1.92%;margin-left : 1.92%;}}@media only screen and (max-width:640px) {.fusion-body .fusion-builder-column-8{width:100% !important;}.fusion-builder-column-8 > .fusion-column-wrapper {margin-right : 1.92%;margin-left : 1.92%;}} .fusion-body .fusion-flex-container.fusion-builder-row-7{ padding-top : 0px;margin-top : 0px;padding-right : 0px;padding-bottom : 0px;margin-bottom : 0px;padding-left : 0px;} The post Talya Mayfield visits the 2021 Midwest Canna Expo appeared first on Tokeativity®. One of the tools that seemed the most promising: CANNABIS! After countless hours of learning and exploring the benefits of this amazing plant, Anthony, like many parents of children with disabilities, came to the realization that without more research, this remarkable tool couldn’t reach its full potential. Anthony has been on a mission since to grow the best cannabis and to advocate for research on how cannabis can help people with disabilities. Dutch Valley Farms was born from this mission and they are setting an example for what the sustainable, craft cannabis industry should look like everywhere. “My family and what we have created here…. it is special. I have always believed it is best to go into battle with people you trust and we have been through Fires, Ice Storms, the pandemic and other issues together. We made it past the other side and we are stronger because of that. I think the Sky is the limit.” – Anthony Palacio, COO and owner of Dutch Valley Farms and Permaculture Solutions Honoring the land they reside on, Dutch Valley uses natural products, OMRI listed fertilizers, beneficial fungus, microbes and natural predatory insects for IPMS and sustainable farming practices to ensure their flower is free of toxins or chemicals, for both the consumer and the environment. Their sister brand, Permaculture Solutions, offers top quality rosin, bubble hash and soon a new edible line. Dutch Valley Cannabis is so on the cutting edge of sustainability that they even capture all rain storm water run off from the facility as well as the A/C and dehumidifier systems. In fact, the capture is large enough to water the entire grow operation that they bypass the need to pull from the local watershed. It doesn’t stop there, either! They capture the nutrient wastewater and use it to fertilize a vegetable garden. BELIEVE US when we tell you that this flower is DANK, sustainable, ethical and simply beautiful…the Tokeativity HQ Team did a visit to Dutch Valley Farms and we saw it with our own eyes! They even play music to their plants to keep the vibes high! http://tokeativity.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/4-300x300.png http://tokeativity.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/8-300x300.png http://tokeativity.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/10-300x300.png When I tried the Banana Puddintain strain by Dutch Valley Farms, I was immediately enamored with the gorgeous, chunky and sparkly presence of these big, beautiful buds! On the first puff of my bong my mouth watered with those delicious terpenes and flavonoids coming in strong. Easy on my lungs, this strain was a delight to toke and made me feel super relaxed and happy. Perfect for a wind down, the DVF Banana Punch had me chillin hard and feeling good. Their flower is just the kind of fire that we love here at Tokeativity, after a long day of smashing the patriarchy! Dutch Valley Cannabis is crushing it so hard that their craft grow operation is expanding! In late 2021, the team is thrilled to move up to Tier 2 licensing and they are expanding their production to a second facility! Their sister brand, Permaculture Solutions, is also expanding production of their top notch rosin, bubble hash and edibles! http://tokeativity.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/6-300x300.png http://tokeativity.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/3-300x300.png http://tokeativity.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/2-300x300.png We could not be more stoked to support craft, family farms like Dutch Valley. When you buy their flower, concentrates or edibles you know that you are 1. Getting a quality product that is free from toxins, pesticides and bull shit 2. Supporting a BIPOC, queer owned and woman operated farm 3. Supporting a family who is expanding and creating opportunity for their farm fam to make a real impact on the future of cannabis research and science, specifically for people with disabilities. When you are at the dispensary next time ask your budtender more about the farms that you are buying from! Know where your weed is grown, how and by whom! It makes a real difference in real people’s lives in this exciting time in the cannabis legalization movement. Read more about Dutch Valley Farms HERE and if you are in Oregon, make sure to try some Dutch Valley Cannabis and support their amazing farm. 5 States with *Actually Equitable* Cannabis Social Equity Policy Initiatives
Lisa posted a blog entry in Tokeativity HQ Blog
http://tokeativity.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/Actually-Equitable-Policies-Tokeativity-Allison-Holmes-Nickia-Delaware.png by Allison Holmes I started this project looking to make a list of “The Top Equity Bills and Initiatives” being implemented around the country and quickly discovered that claims of equitable legislation live on a pretty broad spectrum. So what is it and how do we ensure it through policy? Is just expungement enough to be considered equitable? I ended up writing this piece on What Defines Social Equity where we did a deeper dive into this issue. Now that we know what equitable policy can really look like, I compiled this list of 5 states who have initiatives in motion that are actually equitable. It is essential that we rally support around these measures! Check it out and TAKE ACTION! Connecticut Medical Marijuana has been legal in Connecticut since 2012. This year there are two bills that would legalize an adult use market, SB888 and HB6377. SB888 was proposed by the governor, but the bill has been highly criticized by the community and equity activists. In response, HB6377 has been introduced by Connecticut United for Reform and Equity (CURE) and Chairwoman Robyn Porter in order to provide a more equitable approach to legalizing adult use cannabis in the state. HB6377 Sponsored by Robyn Porter and CURE “Pipeline to Prosperity” – funding for Modern Cannabis Workforce Development Early registration for equity license applicants Funding for low-interest business loans Labor peace agreements – choice of joining a union for all cannabis workers Equity Task Force – to assess the most effective strategies for community reinvestment Partners with the University of Connecticut for ongoing business support for equity applicants Massachusetts The state of Massachusetts has had a legalized market for adult use cannabis since the end 2016 and has been making strides toward equitability ever since. The Massachusetts Cannabis Control Commission created the Social Equity Program in 2018 to provide technical assistance and education for those most impacted by the War on Drugs. The commission also implemented the Economic Empowerment Priority Program, which gave licensing priority to Social Equity applicants. Currently, there is a bill in the state house (HB 178) that seeks to reallocate cannabis tax revenue into the Cannabis Community Empowerment Fund to provide direct access to capital for Social Equity Applicants. Massachusetts Cannabis Control Commission Social Equity Program provides free technical assistance and education for its participants Economic Empowerment Priority Program gives priority to eligible applicants provides financial support in the form of fee reduction and waivers House Bill 178 Equitable Empowerment of Minority-Owned Business… Cannabis Community Empowerment Fund – offers low or no interest loans to eligible businesses including Social Equity and Economic Empowerment Applicants Requires the state transfer $10 million from the Marijuana Regulation Fund to the Cannabis Community Empowerment Fund by Oct. 1, 2021 New York New York just enacted an adult use cannabis law which will be fully realized in the next year or so. The state gained national attention for including social equity in its original legislation. As New York moves toward the implementation of cannabis legalization, here’s what social equity efforts we should expect to see: Marijuana Regulation and Taxation Act Set a goal to award 50% of licenses to social equity applicants Financial support to social equity applicants Low or no interest loans, fee reductions or waivers Professional assistance provided in application process, and continued support into business operation 40% of tax revenues generated by adult use sales to be reinvested into communities impacted by the War on Drugs Oregon The state of Oregon has had a legalized market for adult use cannabis since 2015. Activists have been working to legislate equity into the market ever since. Currently there is a bill in the house (HB 3112) that would provide a structure for social equity to be implemented. HB 3112 The Oregon Equity Investment Act Calls for cannabis tax revenues to provide for direct investment in the form of home ownership, health care, and expungement of marijuana related charges Creation of equity licenses to support BIPOC cannabis business owners On-premises consumption for equity licensees only, for ten years Delivery licenses for equity licensees only, for ten years Capital and technical support License fee reductions Faster processing of equity licenses California’s Decentralized Approach The California Cannabis Equity Act of 2018 allocated funding for cities and counties to develop and operate cannabis equity programs. Within California there are many different approaches being taken, each one tailored to fit the context of the specific community. Oakland has been a local stand out in implementing a functional social equity process. Oakland Cannabis Equity Program Equity Permit Program Incubator program – general applicants providing equity applicants with funding and property, incubator receives permitting priority over other general applicants “By reserving permits for equity applicants and incentivizing general applicants to support equity program participants, Oakland’s program has succeeded in increasing the number of cannabis entrepreneurs of color in the city.” (Social Equity Legislation in Cannabis: A National Study…) Workforce Development Grant Program – designed to recruit, train, and employ individuals impacted by the drug war Collaboration with Supernova Women – aims to provide avenues for individuals to benefit from the cannabis industry outside of business ownership Join us at the Pride and Equity Tokeativity Social on Saturday, June 12 from 2-6pm PST for a “digital beehive of activities” including discussions and panels on important topics like Social Equity in Cannabis. Cannabis Company, LOWD, is changing the world. Smoke like a grower. Be what you want to see.

(Left to Right: Nickia Delaware, Jesce Horton, Samantha Montanaro) From the moment Kia & I walked into the infamous LOWD Cannabis indoor cultivation facility I knew it had some kind of special magic that most facilities don’t. That magic is from visionary, social justice warrior and cannabis cultivation expert, Jesce Horton. I first met Jesce Horton, co founder and CEO of LOWD Cannabis, nearly 8 years ago in Portland, Oregon just as adult use cannabis was being legalized. He spoke at an Oregon Cannabis Industry Meet Up event that I hosted at Prism House PDX and his powerful story captured the hearts and minds of everyone in the room. He told his personal story that included a strict father who spent time in prison for a small amount of cannabis. His parents tried everything they could to encourage Jesce to stay away from cannabis so he would not fall into the same cycle of incarceration and lack of opportunity. The plant and Jesce had other plans. Big plans. Jesce’s journey as a cannabis consumer began at the age of 15. Despite his parent’s attempts to discourage a relationship with weed, the plant connected with Jesce deeply and forever impacted his life. His dad’s worst fears came true when Jesce was arrested for cannabis possession at the age of 18. He went on to have multiple more arrests and witnessed, first hand, how the failed war on drugs deeply harms people and communities. Jesce is brilliant, motivated, passionate and he cares so much about changing the world view and policies on cannabis. He is still grounded in the same ethos and principles he was when I met him so many years ago – innovation in design, sustainability, precise environment control for high quality results and team building from a foundation of equity, community and culture. This is a recipe for success and we love what they are cooking up over at LOWD! http://tokeativity.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/LOWD-GROWROOM-1024x768.jpegLOWD: Love Our Weed Daily. (Photo: Nickia Delaware) http://tokeativity.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/LOWD-OPERATIONS-MGR-ALEXANDRA-225x300.jpgLOWD Community Manager, Alexandra Burns (Photo: Nickia Delaware) LOWD, which stands for Love Our Weed Daily, sticks out in a crowded Oregon market by honing in on small batch and craft ethos, using highly sought after genetics and a precise growing process that produces the very best cannabis on the market. Their dialed in flow and unmatched quality product speaks to the vast experience that the diverse team at LOWD brings to the table http://tokeativity.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/LOWD-GROWER-225x300.jpegLOWD’S Plant Daddy nurturing the babies. (Photo: Nickia Delaware) LOWD’s tag line, “smoke like a grower”, speaks to the level of care they put into every product. Growers are known for consuming the very best of the best and at LOWD they want everyday consumers to have access to ethical, high quality cannabis. Jesce is also the Co-Founder of the Minority Cannabis Business Association and has tirelessly advocated for building an equitable and responsible cannabis industry through sensible policy. The MCBA works directly with local representatives to support fair implementation and enforcement of sensible cannabis policies and provides resources for governments and citizens to design and advocate for better policies. “Today’s cannabis market needs innovation and authenticity — a lack of cultural diversity, the abandonment of legacy growers, and alienation of its pioneers threaten the culture.” – Jesce Horton, co founder and CEO of LOWD Education is a huge part of creating opportunities for folks in cannabis and Jesce is developing curriculum and instructing at the first college in New York to have a cannabis major, LIM College! He is doing similar work at HBCU Medgar Evers College, as well. People have been cultivating cannabis for over 12,000 years and in just the last 100 years so much of the ancestral knowledge has been erased in the war on drugs. LOWD is passionate about honoring the past and innovating a future that is inclusive, equitable and founded in quality. We are inspired by Jesce and the team at LOWD because they are truly walking the talk of being a part of positive change. They are an incredible example of what is possible and what we can see as cannabis continues to be legalized. Bonus: their weed is seriously FIRE. http://tokeativity.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/LOWD_Sludge_Studios_0042-200x300.jpgLOWD BlūTIPS. (Photo by Sludge Studios.) SB 519: Decriminalization and Healing for Californians
Lisa posted a blog entry in Tokeativity HQ Blog
SB 519 Summary Introduced by Sen. Weiner Co-authors: Assembly Members Kamlager, Low and Quirk What it does: This bill would make lawful the possession for personal use and the social sharing, (see below), of psilocybin, psilocyn, dimethyltryptamine (DMT), ibogaine, mescaline, lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD), ketamine, and 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA), by and with persons 21 years of age or older. The bill would provide penalties for possession of these substance on school grounds, or possession by, or sharing with, persons under 21 years of age. The bill would also provide for the dismissal and sealing of pending and prior convictions for offenses that would be made lawful by the passage of this bill, as specified. The bill would require the Department of Justice to identify those records and provide them to local jurisdictions to initiate the required proceedings. This bill would require the State Department of Public Health to convene a working group, as specified, to research and make recommendations to the Legislature regarding, among other things, the regulation and therapeutic use of these substances, as specified. Existing law prohibits the possession of drug paraphernalia, as defined. This bill would exempt from this prohibition, paraphernalia related to these specific substances. The bill would also exempt from the prohibition items used for the testing and analysis of controlled substances. “Personal use” means for the personal ingestion or other personal and noncommercial use by the person in possession. “Social sharing” means the giving away or consensual administering of a controlled substance by a person 21 years of age or older, to another person 21 years of age or older, not for financial gain, including in the context of group counseling, spiritual guidance, community-based healing, or related services. LETTER TEMPLATE DATE Honorable Scott Wiener State Capitol, Room 5100 Sacramento, CA 95818 Submitted via webportal: https://calegislation.lc.ca.gov/Advocates/ RE: Support for SB 519 (Wiener) re: decriminalizing possession and use of psychedelic substances Dear Senator Wiener, I am writing in strong support of SB 519 by Senator Scott Wiener, to decriminalize the possession and personal use of the following substances: psilocybin, psilocyn, MDMA, LSD, ketamine, DMT, mescaline (from non-peyote sources) and ibogaine as an incremental step to dismantle failed War on Drugs policies. This legislation will also expunge any criminal records for people convicted of possession and personal use of these substances. In light of ongoing clinical trials and research, and their use by many communities for their healing properties, SB 519 will also establish a working group that will provide recommendations to the Legislature on how we can thoughtfully and allow for personal and therapeutic use of these substances in a manner that maximizes public health, safety and healing. [Anything you want to add about you and your interest in this policy] The stigma behind psychedelic substances often overshadows its legitimate medicial value and promise. In the 1960s, researchers were conducting promising studies on the effectiveness of psychedelic substances to treat ailments such as depression and PTSD, until the War on Drugs halted this work. Modern research clearly demonstrates that these psychedelic substances can be a tool for healing and have a promising future for mental health treatment. Beyond halting this promising research, the War on Drugs also enacted the policy of criminalizing people for the possession or personal use of controlled substances. Today, we know this is a failed policy approach as it does not improve public safety, deter personal use, or help people may be experiencing substance use disorder. It is time that California stop criminalizing people that possess and use substances that have immense medicinal potential and look towards how California should thoughtfully regulate legal use to these substances. SB 519 is an incremental measure that relies on a more modern understanding of these substances, and provides space for California to start a more sensible conversation about how we really ought to treat people who are using psychedelic substances for their own personal and medical purposes. Our organization lends our voice to the broad coalition calling and specifically ask for your support for SB 519 by Senator Wiener. Thank you for considering our support for this important legislation. I used to be a Wine Mom… Until I Replaced Wine with Drinkable CBD By Samantha Montanaro http://tokeativity.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/2-2-1024x1024.png If you are anything like me you have been drinking alcohol more often during the pandemic. I know many of you are like me, in fact, because numerous studies have shown that middle aged women have had the most dramatic increase in alcohol consumption during pandemic times in comparison to any other demographic. We know why – this shit is stressful! Life was already stressful for parents who are juggling kids, careers, homes, friends and everything else. Add uncertain pandemic times to that mix and we are all one mishap away from a total breakdown. My (conservative, non cannabis consuming) neighbor told me the other day that she was cracking a bottle of wine at noon nearly everyday simply to deal with parenting two kids under the age of 7, schooling and working from home all at the same time. She also spoke to how crappy and stressed she feels and how it is not helping anything…. but she is desperate for relief every single day. Drinking is so ingrained in the fabric of our society, it is hard to imagine our lives without it. It was my pure pleasure to give her a couple bottles of my not-so-secret weapon to productivity, health, relaxation, joy and sanity: Danodan, a USDA Certified Organic, water soluble CBD elixir and ZV Botanicals CBD Bitters (organic, 100% woman owned) to add to any drink of her choice. Have your cake and eat it too, sister friend! Refreshing, relaxing cocktails without hangover, inflammation and all of the other negative side effects of alcohol. Pinch me! http://tokeativity.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/3-1-300x300.png I love drinking delicious things and I know so many other people who do too! I am so incredibly stoked about CBD cocktails for this reason! I don’t have to stop drinking altogether – I am just changing what it is that I am drinking. Here is my go-to recipe for a CBD cocktail that has endless possibilities: http://tokeativity.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/4-1-1024x1024.png I AM OBSESSED WITH THESE COCKTAILS! And my body, mind and spirit are thanking me for it! Cannabis asks us to take our healing into our own hands. Cannabis asks us to listen deeper to what our body and spirit is telling us. Cannabis is gentle and loving to our bodies and that is something that any mom can get behind! No payment was exchanged for this promotion, ya’ll. I really just love these products that much. They are changing my life and I am excited to watch companies like ZV Botanicals and Danodan innovate consumption for future generations! More than 40 percent of Americans now live in states — 18 in total — that have embraced full legalization. Roughly two-thirds of Americans back legal weed, according to polls. .fusion-body .fusion-builder-column-2{width:50% !important;margin-top : 0px;margin-bottom : 20px;}.fusion-builder-column-2 > .fusion-column-wrapper {padding-top : 0px !important;padding-right : 0px !important;margin-right : 3.84%;padding-bottom : 0px !important;padding-left : 0px !important;margin-left : 3.84%;}@media only screen and (max-width:1024px) {.fusion-body .fusion-builder-column-2{width:100% !important;order : 0;}.fusion-builder-column-2 > .fusion-column-wrapper {margin-right : 1.92%;margin-left : 1.92%;}}@media only screen and (max-width:640px) {.fusion-body .fusion-builder-column-2{width:100% !important;order : 0;}.fusion-builder-column-2 > .fusion-column-wrapper {margin-right : 1.92%;margin-left : 1.92%;}} Virginia The state made history as the first in the Old South to approve a recreational legalization bill in February. But it also sparked sharp criticism from both legalization supporters and opponents by delaying implementation until 2024. Last Wednesday, Democratic Gov. Ralph Northam called on the legislature to speed up the legalization timeline, proposing amendments to allow possession and home cultivation starting July 1. New York After years of near-misses, New York legalized adult-use cannabis last week. Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed the “Marijuana Regulation and Taxation Act” into law just hours after it cleared the Legislature. New Yorkers aged 21 and older can now legally possess and consume cannabis, but dispensaries are not expected to open until at least 2022 under the new regulatory structure. New Mexico New Mexico required a special session to get marijuana legalization legislation over the finish line after three years of trying, but both legislative chambers ultimately passed a bill last Wednesday. Debate over scrapping old marijuana-related convictions and caps on plant counts dominated discussions, and Republicans dug in their heels at the end of the regular legislative session — ultimately leading Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham to call the special session to address weed.
