    Cannabis Is Aromatherapy

Cannabis is Aromatherapy Amanda Breeze (originally published in Anarres Natural Health Newsletter 2021) When you brush against a rosemary bush, slice into an orange, or take a walk through a forest, what you are experiencing are the tiny scent molecules known as terpenes! More than 20,000 terpenes exist in the plant kingdom, and they boast profound therapeutic effects on the mind and body. In Wholistic Aromatherapy, we blend terpenes extracted from flowers, herbs, and other plants, in the form of essential oils. Essential Oil blends treat health conditions through diffusion, inhalation, and topical applications such as lotion, cream, or ointment. Cannabis Medicine and Aromatherapy are interconnected as both therapies rely on these volatile scent molecules! More than 200 terpenes have been found in cannabis, with each cultivar or strain, having a unique terpene profile. In combination with cannabinoids like THC or CBD, terpenes influence the relaxed, balanced, or energetic effects that specific strains are known for. Identifying the terpenes in cannabis can be done by lab testing a small batch of flower or through an emerging profession known as Interpening. Interpeners use aroma as a tool to determine the potential effects of each strain. As we say, smell dictates effect. The combination of terpenes naturally produced in individual cultivars influences the overall feeling of the cannabis experience. For example, Linalool, the primary terpene in Lavender essential oil, is known for its calming properties. It has a similar calming effect when experienced in high-linalool cannabis strains. We can apply the science of aromatherapy to cannabis medicine in order to understand the effects of terpenes on all systems in the body, not just the mind. Aromatherapists understand our bodies' physical responses as well as energetics. Through inhalation or topical use, the therapeutic applications of essential oils can be applied when recommending wholistic cannabis medicine and to enhance recreational cannabis experiences. This intersection of cannabis research and wholistic aromatherapy is both illuminating and inspiring to me. As an Aromatherapist and Interpener, the precise blending of terpenes from both cannabis flower and essential oils strengthens my full-spectrum formulas to better treat pain and inflammation. With terpene profiles becoming more commonly available in the legal cannabis market, aromatherapy offers valuable insights into the therapeutic benefits of cannabis terpenes. Amanda is a certified Aromatherapist and Formulator, graduating from the Wholistic Aromatherapy Apprenticeship at Anarres Natural Health Apothecary in Toronto. She specializes in Cannabis Topical Formulations and the successful therapeutic applications of terpenes in cannabis medicine and aromatherapy. Amanda offers diverse knowledge and perspective in all areas of the cannabis industry. She is a certified Cannabis Interpener through the Trichome Institute Interpening Program. Her exceptional ability to assess quality cannabis comes from a professional working knowledge of the plant and unique industry experience.
